Growth Mindset at work...
On holidays and treating myself to a Netflix morning while the builders work on our house.
While watching "Formula 1, Drive to Survive" ( a fascinating series!) I heard a young girl ask the F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg this question.
"Do you have a growth mindset so that you are always aiming at winning?"
I was just blown away to hear someone so young ask about a growth mindset so confidently. What a great example of children approaching life in such a positive frame of mind.
While some may voice concern that the girl made winning part of her focus, I saw it completely differently.
What caught my attention was that she was meeting a famous sportsperson from her own country and that she recognised that having a growth mindset is very important to achieving success.
This is what Maths Connection is all about.
Success comes from having a growth mindset to start with, whether you are a student, a teacher or a carer.
In the teaching role that I have just left, it became clear right from the start that the students I was working with, and myself needed to have a growth mindset in order achieve success as learners and teachers. These students have struggled in maths for a long time, so the first few weeks were spent building their self esteem and relationships so that they became more prepared to having a go at the learning experiences presented to them.
It would have been easy to give up in the first few weeks, as I felt I was getting nowhere, but perseverance and a positive attitude resulted in these students coming a long way in just the short time I had with them.
It's all about having a Growth Mindset!!!
