Make 100...or More!!

This is a fun activity that develops skills in using the four operations

( +, -, x, ÷ )separately, and together.

Goal:

Be the first to 100 ( or further if you like)

You Need:

2 dice ( 6 sided okay, but I prefer 10 sided as it allows the use of all numbers in our system)

Feel free to start with just addition, but over time begin to use more than one operation, use a few together.

To Play:

Player 1 rolls both dice.

Choose whether to +, -, x, ÷

Eg 6 x 2 = 12 6 ÷ 2 = 3 6 – 2 = 4 6 + 2 = 8

Player 1

Equation Total Running Total

6 x 2 12 12

4 + 3 7 19

6 - 1 5 24

Player 2

Equation Total Running Total

7 x 3 21 21

8 ÷2 4. 25

9 - 3 6 31

Keep taking turns and be the first to get exactly 100, or as close to as possible with your last roll.

As you get closer to 100.which operation/s will be best to use?

Other Options:

· Use 10 sided dice

· Use 3 dice to make number sentences with more than 1 operation

eg 6 x 3 + 9

· Set higher targets eg 500, 1 000

· Player 1 rolls 3 dice, Player 2 tells them which 2 operations to use

· Younger children, use just 1 die and add each roll, gradually progress to 2 dice, 3 dice with just adding at this stage.

· Play backwards from a Target number, first to zero.

· 3 dice, choose 1 number each roll to be a decimal number

eg 6 x 4 + .4 = 24.4

· 3 dice, one is a whole number, the other 2 are 10ths and 100ths

eg 2.65 Keep adding decimal numbers

Or, Roll 3 dice as above and make a number to 2 decimal places. Roll again to make another, then add both together

Eg 2.65 + 7.54 = 10.19
