Mini Projects for Home
Mini Projects for Home…
Needing something to investigate while at home?
Hopefully some of these ideas could help!
Weird or Wonderful Weather?
Australia is a country of extremes when it comes to weather. In the North of the country we have wet and tropical conditions, while further South we can experience snow. Head East and West and we begin to experience the hot and dry interior of the country.
We live in a country of vastly different weather conditions, terrain and environments.
The local TV station has asked if you can come up with an informative news clip or segment that goes for around 2 minutes.
The focus of your clip is “Our Weird and Wonderful Weather”.
Take some time to investigate the weather in your own town or city, or somewhere else in Australia that has weather that is really different to yours. Research the weather over a whole year, temperature ranges, daylight hours, rainfall, humidity, etc.
After making a very accurate summary of the weather conditions, make some recommendations about when these places would be best to visit, and why.
Maybe even suggest which places would be best to live in and why?
Think of all the things that may influence your decision.
· Distance from the sea
· Transport facilities available
· Population (or lack of it)
· Work opportunities
· Safety
Is Petrol too Expensive?
We all know that petrol is necessary…and expensive!
But how expensive is it really???
Imagine if our cars did not run on petrol anymore, but were reliant on a different liquid.
Can you imagine what it would be like if cars ran on milk? Soft drink? Bottled water? Perfume? Printer cartridge ink? Olive oil?
For this project, investigate the prices of these different liquids, and compare them to petrol prices.
Eg 1 litre of petrol is $1.16 How much is 1 litre of milk? What would 1 litre of mum’s perfume cost? (Or Dad’s!!)
Present your results in a table or graph.
Which liquid would be the most economical to use?
Why are some liquids so expensive for such small amounts?
You might also want to investigate how much the cars in your family would cost each week to run on milk, perfume, Fanta etc.
How much does it cost per week/month/year for your family on petrol?
My Super Gold Coast Holiday
Once the world gets back to normal, you can take a holiday to the Gold Coast!! Okay, an imaginary one of course, but then, if it looks too good to pass up, your family might just do it!!
I know, pretty crazy, but who knows what can happen in this strange world we live in!!
BUT…. (We knew there would be one!)
There are some catches…
YOU have to plan it, supply a budget, costs, directions accommodation…the works!!
If your budget meets the strict eye of approval from your family, then you will feel that you have won something much more valuable than a Willy Wonka Gold Ticket!!
I will leave the planning up to you, but here are the only conditions…
• You have three weeks only.
• You may travel by train, bus, car or plane. (No hitchhiking!!)
• I need to see all costs that you have.
• eg If you go by plane, who do you fly with? (I know the flights may be hard to come by at this moment, so perhaps consider driving?)
• When?
• What do the tickets cost?
• How do you get to the airport?
• Where will you stay along the way if you travel by car? Remember, you need to get there safely, so perhaps you might need to stay somewhere overnight. Or even more. How much will that cost? In what town? Which motel?
• How much do you plan on spending on food each day?
• What will you go and see on the Gold Coast? Admission costs?
• Where will you stay on the Gold Coast?
• You MUST keep an accurate diary of your plans, as well as your costs.
There are so many things to consider, and this WILL be challenging. That’s the whole
idea !!!!
Your parents and family are free to give suggestions and ideas and help…but don’t let them take over, as it is your work.
Some adults may think they have better ideas, but I want you to try and go with your own ideas.
There is no set budget, but if it is way too expensive….SORRY!!
On the other hand, if it’s way too cheap and nasty…you’re staying home!!
Be creative!!
Take a risk!!
Live on the edge and have a go!!
I’m really excited about what I think you will come up with!!!!
Even he is excited!!!!!!
With the current state of transport and travel, there may be parts of this that could be hard to do, so…be creative and make other plans!!
